The Inner Critic: Understanding Introvert Shame

“The Critic” is a judgmental introvert who constantly beats themselves up for any social failures.

The core belief is that “there’s something wrong with me”—it’s a deep, toxic shame. They also often say things like “I'm incomplete. I'm probably unlovable. I'm broken.”

These beliefs lead to frequent feelings of self-loathing and a constant "not good enough" mindset, along with confusion about why life feels so hard and unfair—much like someone in a wheelchair might feel about the need to walk.

There’s loneliness when alone, and deep sadness, accompanied by a sense of unfairness, as if they’ve been dealt a bad hand or given disadvantage in life.

Common struggles include an inability to accept compliments or praise, obsessive negative thinking, and constant inner arguments.

You may also have compulsive behaviours, such as excessive video gaming or porn use, and getting stuck in cycles of mind-reading and overthinking. You might be just as judgmental of others as you are of yourself.
