Do Cultural Norms Warp Our Views on Sexuality?

You’re taught the rules around what’s right and wrong sexually, and people will repeat those rules to you. They’ll label you as things like "slut," "frigid," or "virgin". They'll give you labels that clearly indicate whether or not you're doing well according to those standards—such as being slut-shamed, for example.

There’s nothing in the laws of nature that says it’s wrong for someone to have a lot of sex, as long as it’s safe. But every moral system has its own idea of how much sex is "acceptable." What's interesting is that a Christian woman might be shamed for sleeping around, while a Hindu man might be praised for the same behaviour.

Ultimately, what you're ashamed of is subjective—it depends on where you were raised and what the prevailing moral beliefs were. Right and wrong, in this case, are entirely constructed, based on the culture you're in.
