Why do people make fun of you when you're happy or successful?

I got a great question sent through to me.

Why do some people enjoy making fun of others who are successful or happy, even if they are not successful or happy themselves?

I think this happens for 2 reasons.

The first is innate tribalism. Their brain is wired to always be threatened by someone who's different to them.

So if they're miserable and somebody else is doing well they're going to perceive that difference as a threat. It goes all the way back to 100,000 years ago of living in different tribes. They're a victim to their programming and they've never worked through that.

The other reason I think is the more obvious one is it highlights their own deficiencies.

When you show how well you're doing it's like a challenge to the other person. You're saying, “You could do this, too. You're also a human being… so why aren't you?” The other person will find it easier to drag you down than to have to face their own inadequacies and their own failures. They're taking the easy way out.

Either way, if someone's doing this to you, it just shows their own weakness.

Remember, those who are right for you will always cheer on your success.
