What I learned from visiting a maximum security prison

First time I ever went on a tour of a prison I was taken into the maximum security unit.

There was a guy in there who was notorious because he had escaped from the unit twice.

Yet when I walked in there, I felt like I was being sealed inside a can… inside a vault… inside a box. There was a sense of being totally trapped and monitored at all times.

I could not comprehend how the fuck anyone could escape from there.

It was just insane to me that somebody escaped twice.

But I later learned that not only did he escape twice, he did it in a very simplistic way. One time he just behaved really well until they let him near some tools and then he cut a hole in the fence and left.

That would have never occurred to me. I'd have thought you’d need some sophisticated Oceans 11 shit to get out.

When I walked in there my thinking was, “I can't get out of here”.

But the difference was he walked in there thinking, “How do I get out of here?”

And look what a difference it made.

Your mind only looks for the opportunities within the limitations you impose on yourself.
