The solution to overthinking is action.
Any action.
There’s a little trick I’ll share that I mentioned in the Skool group.
My mom’s a psychologist, and she works with severely disordered teens, many of whom have dissociative disorders.
She found a simple, effective trick: it’s nearly impossible to dissociate if you’re trying to balance.
Literally—balancing—taking one leg off the ground and getting into an angle where it’s hard to maintain—forces your brain to focus.
It’s really hard for your brain to overthink while you’re doing that. All your brain power goes into trying to stay balanced.
Splashing your face with ice-cold water is another way to do this—any kind of physical action that pulls you out of your head and brings you into your body.
You have to be present—cold, balance, physical exercise. Even trying to engage in a conversation, where you really listen to what the other person says, can help.
You don’t deal with thinking by thinking more.
You deal with it through physical action.
Just keep doing it, as often as you need.
You’re not running away from the thought or fighting against it; you’re just carrying on with your life instead of engaging with it and treating it like it’s legitimate.
If it were legitimate, you’d have practical actions that you could take right now. If there’s nothing practical you can do about it, it’s not legitimate.
