So, where does manipulation happen?
Inside the receiver.
The ultimate decision about whether behaviour changes or stays the same happens within you.
It has almost nothing to do with what the manipulator is doing.
It’s not the other person who manipulates you.
Even if they’re trying, the decision to change your behaviour is ultimately out of their reach. They can’t get into your mind and make choices for you, no matter how skilled they are.
In the end, for manipulation to actually take place—that is, for you to change your behaviour from its original path or compromise your plans—you have to decide to obey whatever suggestions they’re offering. They can’t make you obey.
If you don’t decide to obey, the only thing they can really do is move you by physical force, but that’s not really what we mean by manipulation.
You can drag me around and still not manipulate my mind.
You can force a change in my physical position, but you can’t force me to go off track willingly.
That has to be my choice.
This means, if you look back over your life at every time you were manipulated—unless physical force was used—then they didn’t manipulate you.
